Rat King

Hannes and his pregnant girlfriend Barbara experience their holiday at uncle Robert’s finca rather as a strange nightmare than a pleasant stay on a Mediterranean island: The unbearably hot nights won’t let them get any sleep, but bring them the scariest hallucinations, at noon the landlord’s wife strides through the garden, wearing almost nothing, rat traps snap shut all around the house and the building itself with its high fences and its own system of rules resembles a prison. Is Robert really as dubious as he seems to the tourists right from the start? Or is this an illusion, too?

Barbara is convinced of Robert’s bad character. Because of an illness she is unable to carry on investigating, though. So it is Hannes who keeps spying on their host and finally believes that Robert is involved in the elimination of North African refugees. Robert again notices the curiosity of his guests:

He behaves way more aggressive towards them. Now, Hannes has to ask himself a principal question: Do I want to save my own bacon or should I try to fight a menace of much bigger injustice and importance than ours? In the end, fear and egoism prevail. The couple escapes from the island without having changed anything about the miserable political and humanitarian situation.
