THE WEIGHT Opens in US Theaters to Critical Acclaim

THE WEIGHT, starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, opened in more than 1,500 theaters across the United States on September 18, earning a 93% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Set during the Great Depression, the film follows war veteran Samuel Murphy (Hawke), who has been sent to a remote prison camp and stands to lose custody of his young daughter. When the warden (Crowe) offers him an early release in exchange for a dangerous favor, Murphy and his fellow inmates set out to smuggle gold from a remote mine, a journey across hostile terrain where betrayal and greed prove more dangerous than the wilderness itself.

Starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, alongside Julia Jones, Austin Amelio, Avi Nash, Alec Newman, Sam Hazeldine, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, George Burgess, Cameron Brady, and Avy Berry. The screenplay is by Matthew Booi and Shelby Gaines, from a story by Booi, Leo Scherman, and Matthew Chapman.

Rotten Tomatoes' critics consensus describes THE WEIGHT as a survival story "elevated by Ethan Hawke's magnetic performance and Padraic McKinley's assured direction," making it, per Collider, Crowe's highest-rated film since 1999's The Insider. THE WEIGHT opened in over 1,500 theaters nationwide, earning an estimated $2.3 to $2.5 million in its opening weekend, according to trade reports.
