First Trailer for THE WEIGHT, Starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe

The first trailer for THE WEIGHT, the directorial debut of Padraic McKinley, has been released ahead of the film's theatrical release on September 18 in the US.

Set during the Great Depression, the film follows war veteran Samuel Murphy (Ethan Hawke), who has been sent to a remote prison camp and stands to lose custody of his young daughter. When the warden (Russell Crowe) offers him an early release in exchange for a dangerous favor, Murphy and his fellow inmates set out to smuggle gold from a remote mine, a journey across hostile terrain where betrayal and greed prove more dangerous than the wilderness itself.

Starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, alongside Julia Jones, Austin Amelio, Avi Nash, Sam Hazeldine, Avy Berry, George Burgess, and Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen. The screenplay is by Matthew Booi and Shelby Gaines, from a story by Booi, Leo Scherman, and Matthew Chapman.

THE WEIGHT is produced by augenschein Filmproduktion, Fields Entertainment , Under the Influence Productions and is co-produced by Construction Films . The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2026, followed by a European premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. Vertical acquired distribution rights in March and will release the film in theaters on September 18th.
